Maximize your vehicles efficiency
For most of us, vehicles are our single largest contributor to pollution and burning of natural resources. Just think if your vehicle gets 20 MPG and you drive 12,000 miles per year, that’s 600 gallons a year! Small efforts can go a long way.
Keep your tires fully inflated. The manufacturers recommended pressure can be found on inside door wall on the driver’s side. An under inflated tire can reduce your fuel economy by .2% for every 1 PSI drop in average pressure according to fueleconomy.gov. So if your tires are 4 PSI low and you drive 15000 miles/year and get 25 mpg, that would equate to approximately 5 gallons of wasted fuel per year. That may not seem like a lot but there are over 1 billion vehicles in the world so please be efficient and influence others to do the same.
Replace dirty air filters every 45000 miles or earlier depending on driving conditions. A dirty air filter can reduce your mileage by as much as 10% according to Pro Car Mechanics. So with a really dirty filter at 15000 miles/year and 25 mpg, that would equate to approximately 60 gallons of wasted fuel a year.
Replace spark plugs based on manufacturers recommendation.
Keep your vehicle aligned with tires balanced.
Leave the extras at home. Extra weight will reduce your MPG’s.
Avoid running the A/C when appropriate. This can reduce your cars efficiency by over 20%.
Avoid rolling down the windows when you can. This adds to your cars drag and reduces its efficiency though it is still better than running the A/C according to Myth Busters. See the youtube video below.
Avoid fast accelerations.. If you race from stoplight to stoplight, you can reduce your vehicles efficiency by over 30%.
Drive the speed limit on the highways. Vehicles are designed to maximize efficiency at the speed limit.
Avoid idling when unnecessary. Idling gets 0 MPG.
If your vehicle has it, use cruise control when appropriate. Best for relatively flat terrain and low congestion.
Try to avoid traffic. Your vehicle is much less efficient in stop and go traffic. If you can, alter your work schedule and go in early to avoid traffic. Spreading people over a wider range of starting times will help reduce congestion.
